The metaverse: hype or the next internet?

The metaverse, as originally pitched, was a persistent, shared 3D virtual world where people would work, socialize, and shop through headsets and avatars, largely replacing flat screens for a big chunk of daily digital life. That specific vision hasn't materialized at the scale early boosters predicted.

What did stick, in a quieter form, are pieces of the idea: VR and AR headsets found real footholds in gaming, industrial training, and remote collaboration for specific tasks like design review, even without becoming a mainstream daily habit for most people.

The more durable lesson is that virtual and augmented reality tend to succeed when they solve a specific, well-defined problem — training a surgeon, visualizing a building before it's built — rather than trying to replace the general-purpose internet all at once.
